THE LONG GOODBYE.

image

Ceremony winding down…two hours since it started,
Long black limo disappears…well-wishers departed,
Floral tribute from her work…on a metal stand,
Single rose stem gently placed…by his trembling hand.

Silence broken only by a pensive mourning dove,
Knowing that the chance was lost to tell her of his love,
All the time he thought they had…gone like melted snow,
Held her far above the rest…did she really know.

Circumstance defined their time…never was enough,
Now the tears are building and he doesn’t seem so tough,
Runs his fingers through his hair…tousled and awry,
Thinking back on all they had…and now…the long goodbye.
